Bennassar Biografía Breve |
|
Joan Bennassar was born in 1950 in Pollensa (Mallorca), a town with a strong artistic tradition. He wanted to be a painter from a very young age, spending his days drawing what he saw around him. After completing his baccalaureate studies in Palma de Mallorca, he moved to Barcelona to study fine art at the university there. The changes that Spain was undergoing at that time - the 1970s - would mark his life and work in later years. During this period, his painting had an informalist edge, due to the influence of American abstract expressionists. His real interest lay in the opposition to the Franco regime, and he threw himself into this activity both in Barcelona and in Mallorca. After his military service in 1975, he lost interest and returned to his painting. He spent time in England and Pollensa before finally moving to Barcelona. During the 1980s, he returned to the expressionist mode with which he would continue to experiment. In 1985, he lived for a number of months in Mexico; this stay influenced the use of colour in his painting and distanced him from the human figure, as he turned to focusing on other objects that surrounded him. From this point onwards, he alternated between the presence and absence of figures in his work. He now lives and works in Pollensa. He
has exhibited extensively in Spain, Germany, Switzerland, France, England, Costa
Rica and Japan. He also has a substantial production of sculpture and pottery.
